A year after the Black Missionaries Band last performed at Mzuzu University (Mzuni) Hall, students on Saturday had an opportunity to sample the outfit’s new Kuimba 10 album.

It was a rare reggae affair for the students who are about 10 kilometres away from main entertainment venues in Mzuzu City. It is usually difficult for the fun-loving students to travel for night shows.

At their backyard, endowed with a spacious venue, the students are mostly treated to urban music shows. Live reggae music is something they have been waiting for a year now.

The Black Missionaries, supported by Anthony Makondetsa and ModaFumulani, fulfilled that hunger.

It was a moment to set aside the assignments, the books and forget about any impending examinations. It was time to get drowned in fun with a dose of reggae vibes.

Every time things heated up, they would emphatically chant ‘Awide! Awide!’ meaning they are ready to be weeded or expelled from school on academic grounds as long as they get the best from the show.

They would, however, caution the first year students through the mantra ‘Yaro Awida!’ much to the amusement of the freshmen who are yet to master the tricks of avoiding expulsion.

That was their moment of fun and nobody would stop them. In fact, those are moments, after graduating, people sit back and say ‘those were days in college’.

And Makondetsa, during his performance, understood such moments as he took up the mantle in leading the chants to the delight of most fans.

The show was fairly patronised with about half of the audience coming from outside campus.
